We have a great group of folks joining the committee, and already they have interesting and unusual ideas to bring to our discussions. I think you can expect great things from your peers this year.

I'm beginning to feel a little nostalgic for my first year, so I'm glad to be working with all first year students, including my new co-chair Shadab Nazar. In addition, Kevin Krause has enthusiastically volunteered to share blogging duties with me, which means you'll have his unique perspective on the committee and the program as well. We're still working on getting team members photos together, so we'll let you know when the main page is updated with photos so you can recognize us when we are on campus.

Without further ado, the new Committee Members are:

Shadab Nazar 1st year, and Co-Chair of the Communications Committee, Technology Committee Liaison
Anand Pandey 1st year, BLUE - Alumni Committee Liaison
Jeffrey Chen 1st year, BLUE - Admissions Committee Liaison
Monish Sharma 1st year, AXE - Career Services Committee Liaison
Kevin Krause 1st year, Co-Blogger, Community Service and Academics Committees Liaison

Please feel free to send comments and suggestions to any one of the team members!

Happy 2010 - New Year Activities

Happy 2010 Everyone!

The Haas campus is starting to come alive over the next few weeks, and there are many activities to attend before school starts up in full swing. The first year evening students are beginning classes this week, and many of us attended the career services Winter Conference on Sunday. Hans Morris, president of Visa Inc. from 2007-2009, gave a strong presentation on managing and excelling in your career focused on eight distinct points. Ranging from advice on how to perform quality work (always challenge the status quo for continuous improvement) to managing a P&L, Mr. Morris provided a well organized presentation. More information about the speaker series can be found at the link below.

The second years will be attending the MPAR seminar this upcoming weekend, and I, for one, am looking forward to the opportunity to bond with my classmates across all co-horts in a simulation program. I've heard it can get pretty competitive, so watch out everyone!

For those of you that like to plan ahead, the first of the Spring Leadership development series is coming up at the end of the month, and on February 3rd Dean Lyon's will be hosting Steve Ellis, Worldwide Managing Director from Bain for the Dean's Speaker Series.

More about Mr. Morris from Visa:
http://www2.haas.berkeley.edu/Haas/Home/News/Newsroom/091221careerfest.aspx

More about the Dean's Speaker Series:
http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/haas/about/deansspeakers.html

49 Ways to get involved at Haas!

Do you know that there are

18 Clubs by Industry (Finance Club, Consulting Club...)
5 Social Clubs (Wine Club, Culinary Club...)
8 Student Run Conferences
9 Competitions & Associations
9 Student Affinity Clubs

at Haas?

Now that finals are wrapping up, it's a good time to think about what you'll be doing next semester. Typically we meet twice a year, once after the annual elections and once for this sync up. This is the time to checkpoint our work during the past 6 months. We're meeting to highlight our accomplishments as well as areas where there's still much to be done (we're Haas students after all!).

Each committee is expected to make a presentation and we'll even get updates from the Program Office and Alumni Relations.

And, afterwards, the communications committee will adjourn to the local watering hole to continue our discussions on the best ways to streamline information! The Communications Committee will continue to work on refining and streamlining the manner in which EWMBA students receive information. Top of the priority list remains creating a "central portal" for information. The purpose behind the portal is to create a single, well-known repository for all information relevant to EWMBA students. No longer will you have to scratch your head in perplexity as you try to recall in which email the particulars about the upcoming social event appeared, they'll all lodge in the same place.

The process to put together such a central portal is ongoing and at this point we're still in the requirements gathering phase. As the summer drags on we hope to be able to shed more light on the goings-on. Stay tuned.

Changing of the Guard

There's been some turnover at the EWBMAA, as I'm sure you're no doubt aware. While individual years maintain their own YahooGroups, there's no sharing of information across the spectrum. Moreover, none of the existing solutions (including the YahooGroups) maintain threads of conversation by interest areas. This forum will enable faster access to relevant information. For example, individuals interested in career related topics can directly jump to that folder and search for specific threads. The forum will also serve as a living repository of events and experiences (with courses, professors, school life etc).Anybody with a '@mba.berkeley.edu' e-mail address can get access to this forum. Others can neither browse nor post topics. Once, you get a confirmation e-mail (within 48 hours), you are ready to contribute. The 48 hour delay is due to having a human being (Ben) at the other end to approve sign-ups. You might ask how this differs from the MBA Alert - well, our newsletter caters specifically to the EW crowd whereas the MBA Alert is ublished by the full-time MBA folks. We also have a no-duplication policy which means if it's in the MBA alert, it isn't printed in our newsletter.

2. Cohort Representatives - First year representatives updating each cohort on eZine news and first year specific items. These folks help first years wade through all of the information overload and point out what's really important. They also help make sure that event organizers take into account the unique academic schedules of the first year students.

3. Haas EWMBAA Blog - A blog that shares what's going on in each EWMBAA committee.

4. Discussion Forum (New)

Thanks Mimi and Alison for all of your hard work last year. They are: Mimi, George Kong and Patrick Fischer.

See if you can identify us by sight when you are at the Haas or Santa Clara campuses. To help you, check out: https://facebook.haas.berkeley.edu/

The committee’s immediate goals are the following:
a. Outreach
b. Build a one-stop source of information
c. Build a community

The weekly EWMBAA eZine is part of our outreach program. If you are not reading it yet, please do so. It provides a summary of events and news for EWMBA students. With all due respect to Siu Yung and Charlene, if there’s one email in your mba.berkeley.edu mailbox you should read, it is this one <grin>.

We are also trying to make the EWMBAA website (http://www.haasewmbaa.com) the jumping off point to get information related to student life, whether it is one of Siu Yung’s Catching Up emails that you missed, CareerNet or the calendar of events at Haas.

Finally, we want to build an online community that will extend beyond the Yahoo! mailing lists and the various blue/gold/axe/oski cohorts. For this, we are working on a web-based discussion forum that will allow students of all years to mingle and talk. We want to break out of the ’08/’09/’10 silos and enable better networking.
