49 Ways to get involved at Haas!

Do you know that there are

18 Clubs by Industry (Finance Club, Consulting Club...)
5 Social Clubs (Wine Club, Culinary Club...)
8 Student Run Conferences
9 Competitions & Associations
9 Student Affinity Clubs

at Haas?

Now that finals are wrapping up, it's a good time to think about what you'll be doing next semester. Participating in events outside of the classroom can be one of the most rewarding experiences at Haas, and we're encouraging EWMBA students to learn more about your options. Many of the clubs will be transitioning to new leadership in the winter and the EWMBAA will be looking for volunteers for various committees, so now is a great time to think about getting involved.

Interested in Practicing your Public Speaking Skills?

The communications committee is always thinking about ways to communicate with you... but here's one that many of you can communicate with future students. The admissions office is looking for students to speak at various information sessions over the next two months. This is a great way to meet prospective students as well as get to know the back stories for some of your fellow classmates. I attended the HP event when I was thinking about applying to Haas, and I remember being incredibly inspired by the various speakers. It's our time to shine!

Several dates are available in Berkeley, and for those of you who would prefer to experience a change of scenery, there are two other opportunities.

Please contact Molly Kihanya to volunteer for any of these events:

Haas Clubbing

The communications committee is reaching out to clubs! We are looking to use the Communications Blog to bring information to the student body in more depth than what we cover in the EZine.

This week I'm highlighting the Women in Leadership Club. They have quite a few events through out the year, which you can check out at their website:

http://groups.haas.berkeley.edu/wil

In October WIL is hosting The Berkeley MBA's Women's Workshop with the admissions team on October 31st at Haas. WIL is looking for women to volunteer at the event. I know there are many talented EWMBA student's who would be wonderful representatives of our program. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Monica Khan or Valeria Guirola, WIL VPs of Diversity.

More information about the conference, which is targeted towards prospective students, is available here

The gang's getting back together

The EWMBA Association Leadership (all committee members + officers) are meeting tomorrow for a mid-year meeting at Haas. Typically we meet twice a year, once after the annual elections and once for this sync up. This is the time to checkpoint our work during the past 6 months. We're meeting to highlight our accomplishments as well as areas where there's still much to be done (we're Haas students after all!).

Each committee is expected to make a presentation and we'll even get updates from the Program Office and Alumni Relations.

And, afterwards, the communications committee will adjourn to the local watering hole to continue our discussions on the best ways to streamline information! The debate may rage on until the wee hrs, we may not be as coherent, but we will still be focused with our communications.

Portals and Communication

We in the communications committee are the first to agree that portals could improve communication. This week, we launched a SharePoint eZine portal to submit eZine event and announcement requests.

https://calshare.berkeley.edu/sites/haasstudents/ezine/default.aspx

This will help our group easily compile all relevant events and announcements for the weekly eZine. It also provides you a quick and easy way to submit your request. Check it out and send us any feedback! You could log in using your Haas user name and password (haas\{user name}).

On another note, we are continuing to work with Haas IT and the EWMBA technology committee on our EWMBA portal. A BETA site for the full time MBA portal has launched, http://portal.haas.berkeley.edu, and we plan on creating a similar one but specific to EWMBA students.

We will be sending out an announcement as we get closer to launching the EWMBA portal so watch out for it!

Kicking off the New School Year

We are a few weeks into the new school year and the communications committee has seen some changes. Rohan Thompson has transferred to the full time program, and as such leadership of the committee has passed to Div Agrawal along with ongoing co-chair Ramon Lim. We'll miss you Rohan, but we know Div is capable of carrying on the communications torch. Other team members include Naveen Prasanna, Rahul Awasthy and myself.

We're all getting back of the swing of things and one of the initiatives we've decided upon is to start to use the blog more frequently, so expect to see updates from us here. If you'd like to get in touch with any of us in the communications committee, please feel free to look us up in class or via email. We'll all be around on campus on Saturday for the Fall EWMBA executive meeting, and we'd love to hear from you!

Keeping Busy Over the Summer

School is done—summer classes aside—until August, but that doesn't mean that the various committees will be taking a rest. The Communications Committee will continue to work on refining and streamlining the manner in which EWMBA students receive information. Top of the priority list remains creating a "central portal" for information. The purpose behind the portal is to create a single, well-known repository for all information relevant to EWMBA students. No longer will you have to scratch your head in perplexity as you try to recall in which email the particulars about the upcoming social event appeared, they'll all lodge in the same place.

The process to put together such a central portal is ongoing and at this point we're still in the requirements gathering phase. As the summer drags on we hope to be able to shed more light on the goings-on. Stay tuned.

Changing of the Guard

There's been some turnover at the EWBMAA, as I'm sure you're no doubt aware. The old team of Anlei Lee, Ben Chong, Evonne Chiu, Min-Hank Ho, Sriram Kumar, Badri Raghunathan and Christina Stewart has departed and at the helm is now Ramon Lim, Divyang Agrawal, Rahul Awasthy, Amber Ulrich, Naveen Prasana, Rohan Thompson and Sunil Kumar.

The committee is charged with ensuring that EWMBA students receive information in a timely and intelligible manner. For most of us that means avoiding being overwhelmed by the volume of emails and communication that so routinely lodges in our inboxes. Over the next few months the team will be focused on streamlining the channels of communication. We're going to do our utmost to simplify the influx of data as much as possible while maintaining a high signal to noise ration.

Let's see how successful we are.
